Pan Hwang-long


Biography

PAN Hwang-Long was born in Taiwan in 1945 in Puli / Nantou County (Middle Taiwan). In his early years, he was trained as an elementary school teacher in Taipei; at the same time he frequently attended first seminars in music.

In 1967, he began his musical studies at National Taiwan Normal University and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor Degree of the Arts.

In 1974, he entered the Musikhochschule und Musikakademie in Zuerich, studying composition with Hans Ulrich Lehmann and theory and counterpoint with Robert Blum. He graduated in 1976.

From 1976 to 1978, he studied composition with Helmut Lachenmann at the Staatliche Hochschule fuer Musik und Theater in Hannover. In 1978, he participated in the Darmstaedter Ferienkursen fuer Neue Musik.

From 1978 to 1980, he continued his studies in composition with Isang Yun at the Hochschule der Kuenste Berlin.

In 1982, he assumed the position of associate professor at the National Institute of the Arts in Taipei, Taiwan. In 1987, he was named as a member of the Music Committee,'Council for Cultural Planning and Development'; in the same year he was elected Chairman of the Music Committee of the Sino-German Cultural & Economic Association. In 1989, he was co-founder and elected President of the International Society for Contemporary Music, Taiwan Section. In 1990, he was appointed as one of the Jury Memebers in the Advisory Committee of the National Theater & Concert Hall in Taipei. He has been a professor of composition at the National Institute of the Arts since 1991 and director of its Research and Development center since 1998.

In 1991, he was promoted as professor of composition at the National Institute of the Arts. Starting from the same year, he was serving as delegate from Taiwan at the UNESCO to attend the International Rostrum of Composers and to introduce works by Taiwan composers.

Pan was the winner of the Foerderpreis des Juergen-Ponto-Kompositions- Wettbewerbs (1979), the Wu San-lien Literature & Arts Award (1987), and Taiwan's National Arts Award (1992). His compositions have been performed by the Oesterr. Ensemble fuer Neue Musik (1980-), the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (1982), the Ensemble InterContemporain/IRCAM (1983), Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (1985), Ju Percussion Group (1986-), Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra (1987-) the Arditti String Quartet (1988), ISCM/WMD (1988,92,99), the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra (1989) the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (1990), Contemporary Chamber Orchestra Taipei (1995-), the Kroumata ensemble (1996), Forum Music Group (1996-), and China Found Music Workshop (1996-), ALEA III (1999) among others.
